Fluxus

According to the ever-so-reliable (haha) Wikipedia, "Fluxus—a name taken from a Latin word meaning "to flow"—is an international network of artists, composers and designers noted for blending different artistic media and disciplines in the 1960s. They have been active in Neo-Dada Noise Music and visual art as well as literature, urban planning, architecture, and design. Fluxus is often described as intermedia, a term coined by Fluxus artist Dick Higgins in a famous 1966 essay.

Fluxus is about the blurring of the line between art and life. For our course, we were required to create some fluxus instructions. Below are my original thoughts. Please, someone act some of these out and let me know how it goes!

Check out "Learning to Love You More" for a really amazing project along the same lines.

Tree Hugger, A Fluxus Series

1. Tree Hugger
Hug a tree and hold it for 30 seconds. Take a picture of yourself hugging the tree. Do not let your day end without being the cause of someone else doing the same.

2. Waste Crusader
If you see rubbish on the sidewalk, in a public place, blowing by you in the wind, or anywhere else outside of a bin; throw it away. Repeat.

3. Environmental Avenger
If you see someone leaving their food waste on a table, ask them to throw it away. If they ask why they should do such a thing, tell them “because I said so.” See what happens. Act accordingly.

4. Hallelujah
When you see someone throw garbage in a bin, sing them high praises.

5. Sensitivity
Listen to the grass grow for a minimum of five minutes. Then, smell it.

6. Recycle
Recycle.

7. Reuse
Reuse an object for a purpose other than what it was created for. Repeat.

Social Disorders, A Fluxus Series

1. Bob and Weave
If you see an extension or some other piece of hair on the ground, pick it up and tell the closest female she dropped it.

2. Sorry
When waiting in a large queue, line-jump to the front of the line and act like nothing happened.

3. Patience
Hold a door for someone approaching from a distance. When they get close (but not too close), let the door go and watch them scramble.

4. Love at First Sight
Stop a random person and tell them you love them.

Push Trolley

Hey, how do you like the new look? Pretty shnazzy eh?

Now you can: comment, do a quick response, feed the fish, subscribe to the updates, search within the blog, get your daily puppy fix, link to my Flickr photostream, link to my Picasa albums, and so much more!

Here are some pictures from a walking push trolley tour my classmates and I went on through central JoBurg. We had one man in front and one man behind at all times to watch us. We also stuck out like a sore thumb; certainly a spectacle. Sorry, I would type more but I am exhausted! More words and pictures to come soon.

Lion Park (Finally)

After writing repeatedly that I would upload my Lion Park pics soon, they are finally here. Over 600 pictures to go through, so it took a while.

The Lion Park is an enormous segmented outdoor enclosure housing all types of animals. You can see Lions, Cheetahs, and African Wild Dogs by driving around on the different dirt roads. All of the other animals are unfortunately caged in much smaller enclosures outside, but you do get to play with Lion cubs!

Scary

White Lions

More Scary

Cheetah

I don't know by what means these animals ended up at the Lion Park, but I found the park to be disheartening because all of these animals could probably easily survive nearby in the wild. Instead, they have been corralled for us to see more readily.

See the bugs in the fur?

They had a Cheetah that they were "exercising" to show its speed.
Although it never hit full speed, it was faster and more agile than I could ever imagine.

They finished the exhibition by getting four volunteers to chase the
object at the same time as the Cheetah.
The handler explained that the contestants only had to be faster than the slowest person.

Eland
Without horns it stands taller than me and probably weighs
at least 600 lbs,but has a vertical leap of something like 80"!

Pumbaa!
Saw several Warthogs in Botswana, always in the exact scenario you would imagine them...
Rolling around in the dirt, cloud of dust surrounding them, covered in mud.

Couldn't decide.

I like birds

Don't know proper name of this bird,
but it sure looks peculiar

I do know that it is also called
the "Shit-Legged Stork" because....
well, you figure it out.

Blinking

Secretary Bird

Stands about chest height on me
eats snakes

Pygmy Hippopotamus

King Hippo

Meerkats are amazing.
Making a soap opera about them is ridiculous.

Leopard

I think this is the most intriguing animal there is.
I also could easily find ten different adjectives
to use in place of intriguing.
